Tree Planting Specification for Advanced Olive Trees
Our guide to ensuring your olive trees thrive
Location: Choose a site with full sun exposure, where the trees will receive at least six hours of direct sunlight daily.
Soil: Ensure the soil is well-drained, loamy, and has a pH range of 6 to 8. Avoid heavy clay soils unless they are improved with sand or gypsum to improve drainage.
Spacing: Space the trees at least 6 meters apart to allow for adequate air circulation and growth.
Season: Plant olive trees in autumn or spring where possible to avoid extreme temperatures.
Hole Preparation: Dig a hole twice the width and the same depth as the root ball of the tree.
Soil Improvement: Mix the excavated soil with compost or well-rotted manure or compost to enhance fertility.
Planting: Place the tree in the hole, ensuring that the root ball is level with the surrounding soil. Backfill with the improved soil, firming it gently around the roots.
Watering: Water the tree thoroughly after planting to settle the soil and eliminate air pockets.
Liquid fertiliser: Apply liquid fertiliser at the recommended rate to reduce transplanting shock / stress.
Staking: Stake the tree if it is in a windy location to provide support until it is well-established.
Mulching: Apply a layer of mulch around the base of the tree to conserve moisture and suppress weeds, keeping it away from the trunk to prevent rot.
Establishment Phase: Water newly planted trees regularly until they are established. Mature trees are drought-tolerant but will produce better fruit with consistent watering.
Schedule: Fertilise in early spring and late summer with a balanced fertiliser suitable for fruit trees.
Technique: Apply liquid fertiliser during establishment phase, as per instructions.
Timing: Prune in winter to remove suckers, low branches, and any dead or damaged limbs.
Technique: Thin out the canopy to improve air circulation and light penetration.
Pest and Disease Control: Regularly inspect trees for signs of pests and diseases and take appropriate action as needed.
Ongoing Care: Continue to monitor soil moisture, especially during dry periods, and adjust watering as necessary.
